Where to get Austrian Rye Bread

One of the best and most important food items is Austrian bread, in particular Austrian Bauernbrot, a dark rye bread made with a variety of spices.

If you life in Austria you will be able to buy delicious types of this dark bread at any bakery and supermarket almost everywhere in the Austria.

Where to get Austrian or German Bread outside Austria

However if you live outside Austria (and outside the German speaking countries),  you will only find a very small variety of Austrian rye bread (or German rye bread, which can taste quite similar) perhaps in major large cities such as London, New York or some of the large cities in Asia, which have quite interestingly often very good Austrian or German Bakeries.

Making German or Austrian Farmers Rye Bread

There is also the option to make the bread yourself. If you are not yet confident to make and create the whole bread mixture yourself there is a half way bread making option. In some countries, in particular the UK a German discounter supermarket chain has introduced a special flour for Bauernbread or farmers bread. It is quite easy to make the bread that way, in particular if you have some experience in dough making and a good feeling for when dough it is ready. A little variation from the standard version of this Austrian farmers bread is to include some ground caraway seed, aniseed and fennel seeds. Some whole fennel seeds can also go into this version of rye bread. It is worth experimenting and to finding the right amount of flavouring to suit your taste. However it has to be said, that although adding spices to the dough makes a real good Bauernbrot, it may not be to everyone's taste, as the bread may taste too strong to some people. Health stores are usually a good option to buy the seeds are they are available at good prices for higher quantities. Supermarkets usually charge a little fortune for spices such as fennel, aniseeds and caraway as they are not so common in in the cuisine of some countries.
